Portia has so much potential as a character - Blanche Mottershead’s former lover with the weight of shared history ever present between them, the author who ‘never could change the pronouns’, the Bohemian who runs in artistic circles liberal enough to publish The Golden Blaze and the wife in 1939 who knows full well that divorcing her husband would mean almost certainly losing her children, leaving her only able to offer part of herself to the woman she loves - and she was relegated to the sideplot of a single episode. She may come across as a manipulative and selfish heartbreaker, but how could she have been shown to have any more depth with so little screentime?

1/5 female characters who deserved better: Lady Portia Alresford (Upstairs Downstairs)
